Mr and Mrs Smith(y)

Day 36 was a rest from walking, but not from labour, as I spent the day editing the Blewbury Bulletin, a monthly task which waits for nothing, not even Miles to Malts. 17 or 18 miles tomorrow will be a relief. Meanwhile Paul is sporting a sharp new haircut and ready for action. We've been joined by Cathy and Clive who will be with us for the rest of the trip - Cathy on foot and Clive on wheels (to whom we gratefully hand over our luggage). They are staying tonight in Gretna Green - only a mile away but a world apart. Gretna is a Garden City, a planned town created to service munitions factories in the First World War. Gretna Green is, basically, a theme park about weddings. Unlike in Jane Austen's time, the blacksmith offers no services that can't be obtained in England - indeed, the waiting list to book a wedding date is probably longer. Clive and Cathy's reports suggest that all is in the best possible taste...I'll spare you the silk dressing gowns and the teddy bears, but I do like this picture of the happy couple (this is before she starts trudging up all those hills with us), and it suggested to me as Track of the Day (or should it be Tack of the Day?) a Broadway favourite: "I Love to Cry at Weddings" from Sweet Charity by Cy Coleman.
