Marching to the Lakes

Day 29: Paul was not feeling well; he bravely started out for one of the toughest days of the whole walk, but pulled out after 5 miles and is still not right - we hope he'll be better in the morning. Danny and Neville completed a mammoth 22-mile walk, with over 4000 feet of ascent, starting in the remote foothills of the Lake District and traversing much moor and bog to get to the good bits in the afternoon: the High Street range and a beautiful descent into Patterdale. The weather was warm and sunny, if sometimes hazy.

We said goodbye this morning to Anne and Richard, but they'll be back with us in a couple of weeks for the finale; today's also Danny's last walking day. It's been great having them all.

The choice of Track of the Day was inspired by the farewells as we set out this morning. We haven't had any Gilbert & Sullivan yet, so here's the chorus from The Pirates of Penzance wherein the policemen are preparing, with some trepidation, for the deeds they have to do. It's got a great beat for marching up all those hills.
