Day 6: the first rest day, and very welcome it is too. We couldn’t come to Stratford without going to the theatre: last night we saw Somerset Maugham’s The Constant Wife, a sparkling comedy, just what was needed to keep us awake after a day’s walking.
Today our own constant wives have returned home, as have Anne and Richard, leaving us for now with each other’s company and our own backpacks. Accordingly we jettisoned as much as possible of our luggage and resolved to wash more often.
Reflections on the first section: it was certainly tough going at times, and my feet have kept up a fairly steady stream of grumbles. But somehow we have got here, and we look forward to the next leg - 8 days, but some of them shorter than those we’ve done.
